Meet Hendrix and hear about his journey.
What began as a routine sports physical in June 2024 turned into a life-changing discovery when Hendrix was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, a bicuspid aortic valve. By the fall of 2024, specialists determined that surgery would be necessary to protect his long-term health and life.
Hendrix underwent open-heart surgery at Children’s in Minneapolis, MN, in March of 2025. Tragically, complications during the surgery and the following day led to an emergency second surgery. Unfortunately, the back-to-back surgeries had been a lot for Hendrix’s heart to handle and resulted in additional complications along with significantly reduced heart function. In the weeks following his surgeries, Hendrix worked unbelievably hard on his recovery and slowly gained strength and heart function. After a month of recovery in the hospital, he returned home, but his journey was far from over…
Persistent abdominal pain brought him back to the hospital just two weeks after getting home. After extensive evaluation, we received heartbreaking news; He would need a heart transplant sooner rather than later as his heart function had decreased to a very low level. After being transferred to Mayo in Rochester, MN, he was quickly listed as a top-priority recipient and remained in the hospital on IV medications to keep his heart functioning as much as possible.
Our prayers and those of so many supporting Hendrix were truly heard, and his Gift of Life call came after less than one week of being on the transplant list! A matching donor heart had become available, and he underwent a successful heart-transplant surgery 24 hours after we received “the call”. In true Hendrix fashion, he worked as hard on his recovery as his care team allowed him to, and he was discharged just ten days post-transplant.
After a mandatory stay of 10 weeks in Rochester for follow-up appointments and close monitoring. On July 31st, Hendrix was warmly welcomed home by his Sheyenne High School Soccer team and many of our friends, family neighbors, and community.
Hendrix is filled with new hope to live his best life and is getting back to being a teenager and doing the things he loves most.
